Chucknut Scenic Drive (Route 11)
The most beautiful Scenic Drive in the Bellingham area complete with San Juan Island sunsets. For the adventurous try Hang Gliding off Chuckanut Mountain or hike a portion of famous the Pacific Northwest Trail. Many will enjoy walking the Padilla Shore Trail. And if time permits explore Larrabee and Bay View State Parks.
For the more sedate, shop for Art and Antiques or dine at some of the area's best restaurants. But if you are the chef in the family, shop for fresh produce and seafood to take home to your fully equiped vacation rental home kitchen. Then relax and take in the site of an eagle soaring above.
Chuckanut Drive (Route 11) is a must see when you visit the Bellingham area. Its a beautiful and slow paced alternative to the Interstate 5 connecting Bellingham to Skagit Valley.
Look for exit #231 north of Burlington. Chuckanut Drive wanders through beautiful farmlands and through the towns of Allen and Bow. You will encounter some of the Pacific Northwest's best restaurants and antique/art galleries. If you have time take a side trip through the historic town of Edison, once a logging and agricultural center, to Bay View and Samish Island which both overlook Samish Bay where some of the state's prime shellfish beds are located.
Continue past the rock shoulder of the Chuckanut Mountains. I this you may stop for a view of the San Juan Islands from many viewpoints along the road. Picnic spots are plentiful. Hikers may wish to walk either to the lakes on Chuckanut & Blanchard Mountains or to the beaches at Larrabee Park or Teddy Bear Cove.
You will finish your scenic drive at the 1880's brick town of Fairhaven, now a suburb of Bellingham.
