San
Juan Islands
There are many delightful
day trips from your "home port" on Lummi Island that
will take you for a memorable cruise through Washington's breathtaking San
Juan Islands. You'll begin each saltwater expedition from
the harbor in Bellingham Bay, just a twenty-five minute drive
from Lummi’s mainland ferry dock. Cruises are available
to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, or to the beautiful Canadian
destination of Victoria, British Columbia. There are also scheduled
trips from late spring to early fall that explore coastal waters
in search of the pods of orca whales who inhabit the area during
that time.
The cruise to San Juan Island leaves Bellingham at 9:30 a.m.,
and embarks on a leisurely trip southwest through scenic and typically
calm inland waterways. You'll arrive at your destination around
11:00 a.m., and will have four hours to explore the quaint little
village of Friday Harbor. While there, browse through the charming
shops and galleries along Spring Street, and stop to have lunch
at one of the specialty cafés or fine restaurants. Visit
the whale museum to learn about the various species of whales
in the area, or rent a bicycle when you arrive and take a local
tour along quiet island roads.
For a day's excursion to Victoria, you'll leave the Bellingham
Cruise
Terminal in historic Fairhaven District at 9:00 a.m. to set off
for a
spectacular trip along the stunning coastlines and protected coves
of the San Juan and Gulf Islands. You’ll arrive to the old
world charm of Victoria's "Inner Harbor" around noon,
and there will be ample time to visit the many attractions offered
in this extraordinary, cosmopolitan city. Browse through the downtown
art galleries and international shops – visit a wax museum,
a "miniature world," or a top-class historical museum.
Step into another era at the famous 
Empress Hotel where you can
enjoy afternoon High Tea in true British tradition. Experience
an old-fashioned ride in a horse-drawn carriage, or board a double-decker
bus for a "grand city tour." The world-renowned Buschart
Gardens are just a short bus or taxi ride from the harbor, and
the grounds are considered among the most beautiful in the world.
Victoria is a truly enchanting destination, and you'll find something
of interest there for everyone in the family.
