Day Trip to:
Victoria
Victoria, Canada
is an easy 3 hour ferry ride away and makes an excellent one
day outing or an overnight excursion. You can catch the
passenger ferry from the Bellingham Cruise Terminal located
in the historic "Fairhaven District".
If you are lucky your captain may stop along the way to
allow passengers to photograph and watch whales. The San
Juan Islands are home to three pods (families) of Orca
whales. All three pods count for roughly 90 whales. There
is also plenty of opportunity to site porpoises, seals,
eagles, seabirds.... don't forget your camera and binoculars.
Your cruise wraps up in
the inner harbour of Victoria, one of the most scenic cities
in Canada known for its magnificent gardens, hence its
nick-name "The City of Gardens". The city
got its official
name from Queen Victoria, who was Queen
of England from 1819 to 1901. The Ferry dock is within
walking distance of the Fairmont Empress hotel, famous
for its afternoon high tea. It is in front to the Empress
where you may catch one of the many 1 1/2 hour Double Decker
city tours or the longer tour to the famous Buchart Gardens.
The inner harbour can be populated with 3500 recreational
vessels each summer and you are sure to see some of the
many float planes that bring people into Victoria by air.
During the summer months Victoria has many multicultural
festivals, shows and music. It won't be hard to find yourself
enjoying Tall Ships in the harbour, a JazzFest event or a quirkie
production from the annual Fringe Theatre Festival. Then there
are the galleries and restaurants! You
will likely need a few
extra days of rest and refreshment when you return to your
Lummi Island home base.
But before you board the ferry once again for your
return home be sure to take a stroll along Government Street,
named after the fact that the province of British Columbia
has its Parliament buildings in Victoria. Government Street
houses many boutiques and shops where you will easily find
that perfect one-of-a-kind item you've been wanting for ages.
Directly in front of the Empress Hotel is the Lower
Causeway along the waterfront where you will see street musicians,
food vendors and local artists and artisans. Its an ideal place
to sit and watch the world.
