Lummi
Island's Sailing Conditions
The
San Juan Islands enjoy the weather protection of the Olympic
Mountains all year.
Mountains influence weather conditions and for
Lummi Island and the San Juan Islands this "Rain
Shadow" effect
affords the area a very pleasant rain pattern making sailing
adventures an excellent holiday activity. In as much as the general
weather conditions of the Pacific Northwest are somewhat wet,
the area protected by the Olympic Mountains creates conditons
that make a trip on the water a fun family event.
If waves are keeping you from a sailing
trip,
reconsider. The
numberous islands in the archipelago are responsible for reduced wave action
in the area's sailing grounds giving us calm waters on most days.
Light winds are the norm for your summer sailing
trips, plenty of sun, average temperatures reach into the 70's
a low percentage of rain. Spring and Fall conditions normally
have stronger, more consistent winds and more rain. The
average temperatures for Fall and Springtime are around 60. Expect
the highest and most reliable winds,
most rain, and highs in the mid 40's for your Winter expeditions.
